Its Not That Deep: Olivia O'brien

Isn't she the girl on that gnash song?

yup. She's the melodic female pop vocal heard on gnash's production of "I hate u, I love u". The song was actually written by her, but she didn't produce it until she started doing productions with gnash. After the success of the song she was signed onto island records and started releasing multiple singles along with "Its Not That Deep". She adopted the Hip hop and atmospheric pop music genre that she showcased in the song with gnash. She is a Los Angelos based artist, with only 6 singles up to date. Her music is mostly known for being unbelievably raw and relatable. Olivia O'brien has been featured on a lot of Spotify playlists such as "sad songs", "women of pop", and "life sucks".

Breakup EP

The record, or better known as an EP,"Its Not That Deep" is like a huge breakup record which is insanely relatable. The first song on the track list is called "TequiliaWine" which is a song about trying to stop herself from thinking about what is assumed to be her ex. She says "Im gonna mix these drinks until you're out of focus" basically saying she wants to drink to forget about him.

The second song on the EP is called is "F*ck Feelings" which showcases the undeniably bluntness that her music showcases. It's a song that demonstrates how women often feel after being broken up with, the feeling of not even being able to be in the same room with that person. The feeling of still having feelings towards a person after the breakup.

The song that doesn't go with the themes of breakups would be "empty" which is a song about depression. The song talks about inner feelings of someone with depression and isn't suicidal, someone who just feels empty enough to contemplate life.

One of the most charted songs on the EP is called "RIP" which is a song talking about missing the person her ex used to be. Many people experience this when a breakup happens because sometimes they seem like a completely new person.

The Editor's Choice

My personal favorite would have to be "empty" because I can really relate with the lyrics and it has a favorable beat to it. I can relate to it the same way others who suffer with depression but are NOT suicidal do. In the song Olivia says "But I'm empty inside, yeah I'm empty inside And I don't wanna live, but I'm too scared to die" which directly links to depression that isn't someone who's suicidal. There are a lot of people who mistake depression with being suicidal, but this song points out the distinct difference. She talks about the thought process of not wanting to live but being scared to die, and feeling emptiness. I feel as if songs such as this bring a sense of honesty and bluntness to the surface about mental illness. It's a song that people can relate to, something that people can listen to and understand what the actuality of mental health is in our current society.
