Are The Neighbourhood In Your Neighborhood?
THE NEIGHBOURHOOD: ALBUM REVIEW
Who are The Neighbourhood ?
The Neighbourhood are a band made up of five members Including lead singer Jesse Rutherford, Guitarist Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels, bassist Michael Margott, and drummer Brandon Fried. Their group cannot simply be described in one genre as they are notorious for crossing and mixing genres together. If you were to describe the sound of their music you might use terms such as Indie rock, Hip Hop influenced, R&B, or all of the above. They started in 2011 with an EP Called “Im sorry..” which lead into their debut album “I love you” in 2013. Since then the band has released three other albums which includes their most recent album, the self titled album was released in 2018.
"The Neighbourhood" .. The Album
It’s an interesting move to name an album, especially one following three other albums along with multiple EPs. Typically the theme of a self titled album is the very beginning of a musicians career, which they obviously are not. The songs on the album are still Covered in their brand, dark lyrics with a bright and consistent drum beat. The songs aren't necessarily sad but revolve around themes of mental health, love, and life in general. This album has a feeling of nostalgia and relaxation, this comes from the soothing beats and raspy lower vocals.
There have been two singles that were released previous to the album “Nervous” and “void”. In “Nervous” Jesse, the main singer, talks about being scared of being imperfect and making mistakes. The lyric that stands out is the lyric introducing the chorus “You got me nervous to speak, so I just won't say anything at all”. Jesse is saying that he’s too scared to say anything because of the fear of saying the wrong thing. In “void” Themes are conflicting between a relationship or his addiction to marijuana. The song touches on relying on something or someone to fill the void, and make him feel “alive”. The key lyric that demonstrates this concept is “I need you to fill the void. I wonder how i got by this week, I only touched you once. Lately I can't find a beat, I used to feel the rush”.
